First grade engineers at Johnson STEAM Academy engaged in the design process using biomimicry to create a protective box for something special. Biomimicry is the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modeled on biological entities and processes. Kind of deep, but fun!
Some ideas included spikes like porcupine quills, hedgehog spikes, and cactus spines; sharp teeth like a shark; sharp claws like a tiger; and a hard shell like a turtle.
Students had a blast and the boxes and plans are on display at JSA.
