Board of Directors Approves Elementary School Next Steps
The next-step recommendation from the Facilities Master Plan Taskforce (community members, CRCSD staff, architects) was approved March 28, 2022, by the CRCSD board of directors.
A dynamic, new elementary school will be built on the Arthur Elementary School annex property (across the street from the Arthur main building), and the Arthur and Garfield Elementary School attendance areas will be combined. The distance between Arthur and Garfield is 1.1 mile.
The plan includes closing Arthur Elementary and Garfield and opening the new school in the fall of 2024. Harrison and Madison Elementary School attendance areas will also be combined by fall 2025 and CRCSD is considering two options: Renovate the existing Harrison Elementary School structure or build a new building on the property of Madison Elementary School. None of the existing four buildings noted here will be demolished.
Recommendation Summary presented to the board of directors
It is recommended that CRCSD move forward with the next steps on the Facility Master Plan with the following actions:
1) Construct a new elementary school on the Arthur Annex for 500-600 students and seek an architectural RFP in the Spring of 2022 with the goal of opening in Fall of 2024
a) Plan for the combination of Arthur and Garfield attendance areas
b) Plan for the neighborhood needs and design with the neighborhood in mind
c) Plan for the repurposing of the current Arthur and Garfield buildings and collaborate with community and historical entities on the historical nature of the repurposing.
2) Prioritize Harrison and Madison combination project as a second project with the goal to seek an architectural RFP in the Fall of 2022 with the goal of opening in Fall of 2025:
a) Organize a subcommittee to consider renovation at Harrison OR a new build at Madison
b) Plan for the combination of Harrison and Madison attendance areas
c) Plan fo the neighborhood needs and design with the neighborhood in mind
d) Plan for the repurposing of the buildings once the direction is chosen
